The Bend Beer Scene, Part 4

This fourth installment of Bend, Oregon’s beer scene focuses on Three Creeks Brewing (technically outside of Bend in Sisters, Oregon) and homebrew supply (and bottle shop) The Brew Shop.

Three Creeks Brewing Company

Three Creeks is Central Oregon’s newest microbrewery, located not in Bend but in Sisters, Oregon (population 1,706). In keeping with the theme of the town of Sisters, the brewery’s design and atmosphere is styled with an “Old West” sensibility with the archetypical “Northwest Brewpub” thrown in for good measure: lots of natural wood, concrete floors, large brick central fireplace.

The beer focuses on several standards with a bit of a unique twist: their 8 Second IBA (India Black Ale), for example, along with their Stonefly Rye, and an Oatmeal Porter. There are also more traditional standards like their Knotty Blonde (their most popular beer) and Anvil Amber. Their seasonal, Rudolph’s Imperial Red, is available in bottles direct from the brewery. Overall I’ve found their beers to be above average in quality.

Food and service is very good, with hearty portions of comfort pub food: the coconut onion rings in particular are definitely worth the price.

Sisters, Oregon, is a tourist-oriented town, and Three Creeks filled a serious brewery niche they were needing. If (for some reason!) you’re finding yourself in town and looking for lunch—or better yet, good beer—then Three Creeks is definitely where you should stop.

The Brew Shop

Central Oregon’s only homebrewing supply store, The Brew Shop is also a boutique beer bottle shop stocking about 100 specialty beers: one of the better-stocked specialty beer locations you can find in the area.

For homebrewing supplies, they stock all the necessities: kits (all-in-one), ingredients (grains, extracts, hops, syrups, adjuncts and extras), equipment (fermenters, kettles, utensils, racking equipment), bottling supplies, and more—and if there is something special you need, it’s very likely they can order it for you. The staff is friendly and helpful, and often answers questions and field phone calls for “brewing 911″ type issues: first-time questions from people who need help in the middle of their first batch (for instance).

Their bottle stock is impressive, as well: imports and domestic beers, with an emphasis on Pacific Northwest breweries (in my experience). If you’re looking for Oregon-represented beers, this is the place to visit first. Prices are competitive with other places in town, and they only sell singles (no six-packs). And if you’re looking for a few specialty beers to accompany your brew day, then The Brew Shop is your one-stop place to shop.
